GEORGE PERRY KEIKI RACE

On May 17th the Hui Nalu Keiki were out in force at Kailua Beach for the George Perry Race. Unlike the regatta season their races ranged from a half mile (10 & under) to 2 miles (12-14 year old) to 4 miles (15 - 18 year old) in some challenging conditions. These crews learned how to maneuver through a blockade, turn on a buoy with several crews, surfed at Flat Island, and pushed through a long race. Maika`i loa!!

Mahalo to Ceci Symanski who registered the crews, and to all of our keiki and junior coaches: Shy Pratt, Jessica Paiva, Claire Poh, Uncle Stan, Tina Roque, KT Scott, Lance Hamilton, Matt Zahn, Rome Stein, Tori Aipa, Nalu Kukea, John Wacker, and Mark Cluney. It was wonderful to see all the parents enjoying the day as well!

A little history:

Mr. Perry started the Lanikai Canoe Club in 1937 borrowing two koa canoes, the Manuke`okeo and the A’a. The A`a was the first koa racing canoe ever built and had been owned by Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana`ole. Specifically organized for the youth on the Windward side of O`ahu, the Board of Directors and Officers were all under 17 years old.  George’s son, Tay, was the first President. The A`a will be lodged in our halau while a permanent hale is constructed.

48th EDITION OF THE MOLOKA’I CHALLENGE by Matt Zahn

Rounding out the OC1 racing season, the 48th edition of the Molokai Challenge took place this past Sunday. This relay, spanning 32 miles across the Ka'wi Channel from Kaluakoi Beach to Maunalua Bay Beach Park, offered steady winds from the ENE and a rising tide.

Hui Nalu had nine paddlers racing - Kamalu Souza & Felipe Carvalho (Ahuwale O-Gs); Kumau Pineda & Donny Kaulukukui (MKK-LIH); Lance Hamilton, Ryan Cooke & Ikaika Hose (Low Expectations); Rich Balancio (Babooze Cruze); and Matt Zahn (Team Uff Da) - with Ahuwale O-Gs taking 3rd in the 40-59 OC-1 and Babooze Cruze taking 2nd in the Open Relay OC-1 (3 or more paddlers).

Definitely was a great way to transition to regatta season!
