Mid-May 2025 Newsletter
Hui Nalu had a busy weekend with members gathering for Ho`olauna, crews entering in the Kala`iomaulani pre-season race, and celebrating Mother’s Day.
The summer will get busier with graduations, wedding celebrations, and, not to mention, the regatta season! Please make sure you notify your coaches if you will not be able to be at a regatta.
The crew regatta kuleana is out. All crews are responsible for either setting up the regatta tent or taking down the tent, washing and putting away the koa canoes.

KALA`IOMALULANI PRE-SEASON RACE by Kevin Mokulehua
May 10th brought sunny skies and strong winds to the annual Kala‘iomalulani Race, an Ironman-style event hosted by Keahiakahoe Canoe Club. The challenging conditions didn’t stop 27 crews from tackling the 8-mile long course and 35 crews from competing in the 6-mile short course.
Hui Nalu showed up strong, entering four crews across both divisions:
|
- Unlimited Open Male (long course)
- Traditional Male Novice, Traditional Female Novice, and Traditional Female Junior (short course)
|
Despite a chaotic start—several boats hit dry reef, impacting our men’s takeoff—the Unlimited Open Male crew battled back to claim 2nd place overall and 2nd in their division.
On the short course, our women and novice crews made us proud:
|
- Traditional Female Junior: 1st place in division
- Traditional Female Novice: 2nd place in division
- Traditional Male Novice: A solid showing, finishing 13th overall out of 35 crews
|
Way to go, Hui Nalu!
After the race, paddlers gathered at Keahiakahoe’s Kahalu`u site for `ono Hawaiian food and live entertainment—one of the highlights that keeps crews coming back year after year.
Mahalo to Lance Hamilton, Mike Samaniego, and Tiffany Arapari for coordinating race entries with Ceci Simansky, and to Eric Burkhart and Toma Turner for organizing the canoes.

GOT PADDING?
YES! We have padding!!! Mahalo to Linda Krieger for saving our okoles! Linda took the initiative to purchase the seat padding and then, joined by Kitty Daniel and Vicki Szymczak, replaced the worn out and non-existent padding to make practices much more comfortable.
