Mid-March 2025 Newsletter
It’s mid March, and we are really starting to roll now!
Practices will start on Monday, March 31st - check the website for a list of coaches and each crew’s practice schedule.
Pre-season races have started, and the hope is to get some of our crews out there to support the OHCRA clubs. Hui Nalu’s own pre-season race, the Kala Kukea Ironman Challenge, is on Saturday, April 26th. In order to run this race we will need to have kokua from all our members, including parents of our keiki. In addition to the race, we have our awesome Silent Auction with Jonna Wickesser taking charge. Each crew will be asked to make a “basket” of auction items usually associated with a theme (see below).

CANOE WEIGHING
Mahalo to all who woke up early for canoe weighing - especially to Toma Turner who took the lead in this massive endeavor. Cesar was happy, we were well organized, and 16 canoes were weighed in record time. Well done all!
Mahalo to Bozo Vierra and Barbara Held who took it upon themselves to spruce up the halau, including chasing out the juvenile chickens. It looked so much better and will tide us over until our massive halau clean up in the near future! Mahalo to all who stayed late to rig the last canoes. You made it fun!

TREE TO SEA CAMP
There was a buzz of energy on Thursday, March 20th at the practice site with the annual Tree to Sea Camp kids. During the week-long camp, they learned about topics in sustainability, ahupua’a & watershed management, and marine science, as well as developed stewardship skills, gained hands-on experience by conducting meaningful environmental conservation-based work, and deepened their understanding of science and Hawaiian culture.
Mahalo to Tina Roque, Natalie Caldeira and Les “Sunshine” Chung who took the kids on a paddle to Marshall’s and taught them the complexities of paddling and working as a team. There they collected organic beach debris to create little wa’a, which were then raced.

HUI NALU BANNER
Mahalo to JPG Hawaii (https://jpghawaii.com/) for our new Registration Banner that is proudly displayed on our lawn. Last year JPG Hawaii surprised us with a Feather Flag to display at our regattas! They make everything from all kinds of banners to table covers to vehicle wraps to event tents to even Big Belly Trash Cans!

KALA KUKEA SILENT AUCTION
The amazing Kala Kukea Ironman Challenge Silent Auction is back, as a component of the upcoming race on Saturday April 26th. Crews from around the island come to Maunalua Bay to participate in the event honoring the late waterman, Kala Kukea. This auction is a great fundraising event for the club and is open to all attending and/or participating in the event. It will open early in the morning and close after the awards are announced.
All Hui Nalu Crews are encouraged to participate by donating an auction basket or other items that can be sold to the highest bidder during the event. Please get together with your team members and discuss how you can contribute.
Basket theme ideas could be “Coffee Time”, “Surf’s Up”, “Beach Day”, “Golf Outing”, “Pau Hana” etc. Individual items are also welcome. In the past, items such as art, jewelry, water toys, gift cards, tickets, sports equipment, snack baskets etc. have all sold well.
Donations should be dropped at the Halau before practice beginning on Wednesday April 23rd thru Friday April 25th. All donations must be labeled with the theme name / description of the item(s), and approximate value. If your donation is meant to be in a basket, please bring it wrapped in cellophane. If you need a donation receipt for tax purposes, please note it on the basket label along with whom it should be addressed to.
Mahalo for your kokua, and please contact Jonna at jwickesser@aol.com with any questions.
