WAIMANALO REGATTA

Waimanalo Beach proved to be challenging for everyone. Again, Hui Nalu finished 4th overall, 8 points behind Kailua.

Many, many hands were needed to boathold; mahalo to Tia and Kapono Brown, Maggie Twigg-Smith, Gavin Hanoa, Amanda Smith, Lance Hamilton, Kevin Mokulehua, Mark Cluney, Alyssa Mahoe, Barb Held, Lisa Ah Sing, Jessica Carew, Ginny Lee, Claire Poh, Kai Mead, Heidi Strauss, Poly John Arapari, Lianne Cameron, Jeff Iwashita, Josh Lorge, Carl Jaxon, Bozo Vierra, Bobby Hastings, Jason Daly, Rich Balancio, Heath Allen, Haseena Zachariah, Bryce Clombel, Jared Washkowitz, Ryan Cooke, Erik King, Shauna Alip. Noeland Caldeira, and Nakoa Gumapac-McGuire. Many of these boatholders held the canoes multiple times.

Mahalo also to the many members who helped get crews into the canoes! One of the many challenges of the day.

MACFARLANE REGATTA

We are on to the Macfarlane Regatta in Waikiki. This is a “for fun regatta” but it is still highly competitive. Depending on the surf conditions open steersman may be an option. Points do not go toward qualifying for a berth in the State Championship. This is a regatta about catching that wave and sometimes surviving the ride!

Please remember that you represent Hui Nalu Canoe Club. There will be lots of tourists who have no idea what is going on. Please be respectful of them AND the hotel staff AND the other clubs. If your keiki are in the water please keep an eye on them. There will be canoes going in and out of the shore.

The Novice B Men and Women have set up and take down. Set up starts no earlier than 5 a.m.

LEEWARD KAI MEDALS

The Leeward Kai medals have not arrived yet.

KEIKI FUN DAY

This past Saturday was the Hui Nalu 1st Annual Keiki Fun Day with activities planned around Hawaiian culture and learning about Maunalua Bay.

They learned E Ho Mai, parts of the canoe, competed in a bailing contest, learned knot tying, making kupe`e, coconut weaving, an all-things- wa’a scavenger hunt, ate Hawaiian food and ended the day playing in the water.

Mahalo to Kai Mead who created this raucous day of fun, to Claire Poh and Uncle Stan and the many alaka`i who came to kokua in the activities. Mahalo to the Sidney Stern Foundation for supporting the event.
