KALA KUKEA IRONMAN CHALLENGE WRAP UP

Saturday, April 26th was a very busy day in Maunalua Bay. Thankfully the weather cooperated, making for a great day on the water and a fun Kala Kukea Iron Challenge! Many of the newest and youngest Hui Nalu members got to experience their first race.

Mahalo to Nalu Kukea, our race director, Kapono Brown, our keiki race director, Reney Ching, creator of the bentos and musubis, Jonna Wickesser and Ronette Kawakami, Silent Auction organizers, KT Scott, merchandise and award creator, Gavin Hanoa, our OHCRA safety boat official, Jason Daly, our canoe organizer, and Ceci Symanski, our race entry specialist.

Without these members the race would not have existed.

Our Silent Auction is one of the things that makes this race special. It is so well organized and we always have great items to bid on that go for great deals! Mahalo to all the crews who put together baskets for the Silent Auction. There were some spectacular items! A special mahalo to Marcia Omura, master lauhala weaver, who donated two beautiful lauhala papale that she hand crafted!! Mahalo to Jonna Wickesser for donating a Tiger paddle honed by her late husband, Damian. Mahalo to Heidi Strauss for the two F45 one month free for 2 passes! Mahalo to Linda Krieger for the beautiful Hawaiian quilt!

- Cathy Kam-Ho, President Hui Nalu Canoe Club

MORE PRE-SEASON RACES

This weekend is the Ka Lei o Ka Lanakila race at Sand Island on Sunday, May 4th. If you are planning to race please let Toma know as early as possible to reserve a canoe.

On Saturday, May 10th, Keahiakahoe Canoe Club will host the Kala`iomalulani Race at the He`ehia Pier. We hope that more of our crews will be ready to enter that race. It is a great venue for racing. Not so spectator-friendly but a great lu`au after!

As a reminder, there is a lot that goes into racing, and we need everyone who is participating in the race to help with the loading and unloading, rigging and unrigging, as well as washing and drying the canoes. We also need to have someone tow the canoes to and from the race site.

Entry fees are the responsibility of the paddler or parent.
