Join the Relaunch of the Aʻa Canoe!
OHCRA invites you to celebrate the relaunching of the Aʻa on Saturday, November 8th, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Keʻehi Lagoon.
About the Aʻa
The Aʻa (affectionately called the ʻĀ) is a historic 40-foot waʻa kialoa (racing canoe) that was owned and raced by Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole in the early 1900s. It is currently held at the Bishop Museum and is believed to be the first canoe built in modern history specifically for racing, as part of Prince Kūhiō’s efforts to revitalize the importance of the canoe in Hawaiian culture.
Event Highlights
The relaunch celebration will feature:
- Educational Booths (information on the Aʻa and koa canoes)
- Moʻolelo Sessions (storytelling)
- Food and Drink Vendors
The Hui Nalu club will also be participating, bringing their canoe, the Enay, to join the launching ceremony.
