HUI NALU BOARD ELECTION RESULTS

The Hui Nalu Board of Directors ballots have been tallied!  Congratulations to Bobby Hastings, Jeff Iwashita, Nalu Kukea, Andy Stenger, Cecilia Symanski who will serve 3 year terms and Darryl Hara who will serve a two year term. Vann Burkhart and Mikayla Bloom are our new Junior Board members who will serve one year terms! Congratulations to all!

Mahalo to all the other nominees who willingly stepped up to be a part of this process.  All of you already do so much in helping make Hui Nalu who we are.

At this time I would like to extend a mahalo nui to Linda Krieger and Jonna Wickesser for their years of service on the Board! Your time and insight were truly valued and we know that you will continue to contribute to Hui Nalu Canoe Club.

A FACELIFT - MAUNALUA BAY SHORELINE

The Maunalua Dredging and Facility improvements are underway and progressing quickly. This $6.8 million project, administered by the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (part of the State Department of Land and Natural Resources), involves:

- Dredging in seven areas around the boat ramp and in the channel.
- Replacing some channel markers.
- Repairing and restoring seawalls and eroded shoreline areas.

American Marine Company is the contractor, and the project is scheduled for completion by April 2026.

Project Progress
You can already see the progress at the practice site, where a new steel sheet wall is being built seaward of the eroded shoreline. This wall will be capped with concrete. Dredged material will be used to reclaim the eroded area, significantly increasing the space for canoe storage. Additionally, sand will be placed along 130 feet of the shoreline used for launching canoes.

The project will also extend east from the boat ramp to the Keahole Street entrance. Here, the existing rock wall has failed and is frequently overtopped by waves. A new concrete-capped sheet pile wall will be installed along this length, with one section left open for recreational access to the water.

A Special Mahalo to Our Community
It has taken years of significant community involvement and pressure to get this project moving. A huge mahalo to Brendt Chang, a commercial fisherman from Hawai'i Kai, who spearheaded this effort for many years. His persistent appeals to politicians and tireless work in securing funding and coordinating with the state were crucial to making this project a reality.

We also want to extend a mahalo to Darren Orr and Hawaiian Cement for donating 6.5 tons of gravel and topsoil from Island Topsoil to fill the potholes in our parking lot. Thank you also to Mike Hunneman and Greg Poole for making the connection that led to this generous donation. Please drive slowly over these areas to help the new gravel settle in place.
