RELAUNCHING OF THE A`A

OHCRA is celebrating the relaunching of the Aʻa on
Saturday, November 8, at Keʻehi Lagoon from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

In the early nineteen hundreds Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole took part in efforts to recapture the importance of the canoe in Hawaiian society. The A`a, also known affectionately as the ʻĀ, is a 40’ waʻa kialoa or racing canoe, currently held at the Bishop Museum that was owned and raced by Prince Kūhiō. It is believed to be the first canoe built in historic times for racing.

Along with the relaunching of the A`a, there will be educational booths to provide information about the A`a and koa canoes, mo`olelo sessions, food and drink vendors.

Hui Nalu will be bringing the Enay to join in the launching. Contact Mark Cluney for details (markcluney@gmail.com).

To join us at the A`a relaunch and kokua, register here .

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND STEWARDSHIP

The Restore with Resilience Maunalua Bay listserv is being transferred from a hawaii.edu group over to a google group. If you would like to remain on the listserv, you may add yourself by sending an email to:

rwr-maunalua-bay+subscribe@googlegroups.com

Subject line or body text is not necessary to be added.

They are planning to have at least one more volunteer event before the end of the year. If you would like to be notified, please sign up for the new listserv.

Additionally, the RWR team is working to restructure volunteer events in Maunalua Bay, and your help is needed to continue to lead this project. If you are currently a Core Volunteer Leader (CVL) or interested in becoming one, please fill out the form here. CVL’s have a leadership role and assist during events to set up and break down, guide volunteers at stations, and help to make sure events run smoothly. Please kindly complete the form before Friday, October 24th, 2025. We are planning a CVL workshop soon for those who fill out the form, so please sign up if you’re interested.

Mahalo nui for your continued support for a healthier future in Maunalua Bay!
