As you may remember, OHCRA is celebrating the relaunching of the Aʻa on
Saturday, November 8! Hui Nalu will be joining in the launching.

We are also getting closer to the Kaiwi Coast Run & Walk. This is the largest fundraiser for our club, and we will need everyone's kuleana.

See below for details on both events!

RELAUNCHING OF THE A`A

In the early nineteen hundreds Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole took part in efforts to recapture the importance of the canoe in Hawaiian society. The A`a, also known affectionately as the ʻĀ, is a 40’ waʻa kialoa or racing canoe, currently held at the Bishop Museum that was owned and raced by Prince Kūhiō. It is believed to be the first canoe built in historic times for racing.

OHCRA SATURDAY RE-LAUNCH CEREMONY  - SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8th

  • 6:00 AM - Gates will open.
    • We will need to fill the outside stalls before we can open the field. We will not have access to the entire field, but only to about 1/3 of it, so please plan accordingly.
  • 6:30 AM - The blessing and protocol are scheduled to coincide with the sunrise.
    • The A’a canoe will be set up on the beach, usually at the first coconut tree, our regatta spot #3.
    • The Bishop Museum has asked that Healani and Lanikai flank the A’a because of their history with the canoe. Then all other Koa Canoes can flank left and right where there is room. From there, any glass canoes can line up on the beach.
  • The land blessing and protocol will be followed with a paddle out of the A’a for a lap, and then all koa, followed by the fiberglass canoes, will paddle out to surround the A’a.
  • More oli and prayers will be offered, and the ho’okupu will be released to the ocean by the Manupau Ohana, who will be on the initial paddle out for the ceremony.
  • Once the ho’okupu have been released, the A’a will make its way back to shore!
    • All canoes, both koa and glass, should wait until the A’a hits the shore before making their way back to shore themselves.
  • The A’a will be taking out VIP and honored guests on laps around the lagoon throughout the day. Any koa canoe that has a connection and history with the A’a is then invited to take a lap with the A’a.
    • If you have any guests you want to take along, we will need to have them sign a waiver as usual.
  • There will be a couple of food booths for everybody to enjoy, so please support them. There will also be an event tent, where a couple of panel sessions are scheduled. Everyone is invited to attend and listen to the discussions.
  • 12:00 PM - The event officially ends, but we are welcome to stay and enjoy the rest of the day!

We hope Hui Nalu members will come and celebrate the occasion!
Please wear a Hui Nalu Canoe Club shirt.

KAIWI PACKET STUFFING AND T-SHIRT FOLDING

Sunday, November 9th, we will be packet stuffing and possibly folding t-shirts for the Kaiwi Coast Run/Walk at the halau.

If anyone is available, we will start around 10:00 A.M. after  Sunday morning OSP. As with anything, the more hands we have, the faster the work gets done!

Contact Lesley at ljilitzky@gmail.com if you have any questions.
