HEAD COACH

The Hui Nalu Board of Directors is proud to announce that Mark Cluney has agreed to step in as Head Coach for the remaining part of the regatta season!

Mark comes with a wealth of experience and knowledge as an elite paddler, coach and head coach. He began paddling in the 1970’s with Hui Nalu and truly feels this is home for him. Some of his goals are to bring back the pride, culture and competitiveness to Hui Nalu and has already started to get to know the coaches and work with them.

Congratulations, Mark, and we mahalo you!

MACFARLANE WRAP UP

We survived another challenging regatta for all the clubs with some very close and exciting finishes and some close calls!

Mahalo to all our steersmen who battled the surf:

Adam Treinen-Aea, David Loui, Maggie Twigg-Smith, Tia Brown, Bruce Blankenfeld, Kamu Yunson, Noeland Caldeira, Gavin Hanoa, and Nakoa Gumapac-McGuire.

KEIKI ICE CREAM SOCIAL

I don't know what year the Ice Social started, but it has been going on for years. Reney Ching, our past Head Coach, graciously sponsors this Ice Cream Social for the Hui Nalu keiki!

This year it will be held on Friday, July 18th. The 10 & under will go first at 4:15 p.m. with the rest of the horde to follow at 4:30 p.m.  Service closes at 5:30.  Reney has to get to the airport!

PA`INA

Please be sure to reserve Saturday, July 26 at 4 p.m. for our annual Pa`ina!

This is our time to celebrate the end of the regatta season and the start of Long Distance season. his year we will do a Talk Story with former Head Coach Reney Ching, long time coaches and paddlers Rocky Higgins and Darryl Hara, as well as our new Head Coach Mark Clune. All have deep ties with Hui Nalu Canoe Club.

Don't forget to bring your cash! The Junior girls will be doing a bake sale to help with their Long Distance expenses.

`Ohana are welcome to join in the fun! Food will be catered. Bring your own pupu and drinks.

Please RSVP here by Sunday, July 20th.

KAUPIKO REGATTA

Congratulations Hui Nalu Canoe Club! Overall the Club took 3rd place finally breaking 100 points by amassing 111 points just 5 points behind 2nd place Outrigger!

Kane`ohe Marine Corp Air Station is probably the most picturesque site to hold a regatta and yesterday’s weather made it perfect. We are very fortunate to have that relationship. Mahalo to Lt. Col. Jeremy Beavens, who unfortunately, was not on island to participate in the military race this year. Mahalo to Lt. Col. Koch who took his place while only being transferred here last month and did race! Also mahalo to Kristy Kaluhiwa and Dar Silva who are always there.

The day started at 4:30 a.m. when the dawn patrol, under the direction of Tia Brown and Jason Daly, got set up to welcome the hordes of cars.  Mahalo to all who worked the parking, especially to those who did multiple shifts! There were a lot of people who did more than 10,000 steps yesterday.

A HUGE MAHALO to Tia Brown and Lita Blankenfeld who did an amazing job organizing the whole regatta. Running an OHCRA regatta, working with the military, and getting 500 members to work is a job not many would be willing to undertake.

And, lastly, mahalo to the Club members who worked the many facets of this regatta. In order to make this regatta successful it takes many, many, many hands. I can’t emphasis enough that this was a “kakou thing” and needed all the help we could get from the membership.
